Nursing was not always in my sight. I never thought about becoming a nurse when I was a little girl. It was until 2015 that I felt I was being called to become a nurse. My grandfather was diagnosed with end-stage lung cancer and passed away after five-month battle. Through the battle that was to be the last five months of my grandfather’s time with us, our lives were expanded to include nurses from so many disciplines; oncology, radiology, emergency, operating room, anesthesia, home health, hospice, and many more. Within each discipline we found answers, advocates, support, comfort, love, compassion, empathy, and sincere care for our fight. We were so blessed and grateful with the nurses that not only understood the battle but were equipped with an arsenal of skills and a fearless and tireless dedication. They faced the battle with us at every step. My grandfather was the first person I ever saw die. I will never forget the love, attention, care, dedication, compassion, and empathy the nurses gave my grandfather and us as his grieving family. During my grandfather’s stay in the hospital, the nurses not only went above and beyond to ensure that my grandfather got the best care possible as well as making sure that the rest of the family was taken care of as well. They brought us food and drinks so that we did not have to leave the bedside when my grandfather was critical. They were so patient with us and our one million questions, always taking the time to listen to our worries and fears. I was moved by the amazing care that my grandfather received from the nurses and was so grateful for the way they treated us and comforted us in our most vulnerable moments. I can recall one nurse in particular named Katie who was very kind, empathic, and caring. She not only took care of my grandfather and us in the present and helped us through the death of my grandfather. On the day of my grandfather passing, she stayed after her shift, she was sitting there with us, holding our hands, comforting us, hugging us, and crying with us. Katie even stayed in touch with us months after my grandfather had passed. She would send us text messages to see how we are doing. My family and I were all very appreciative to Katie and we do wholeheartedly believe that she was with us through this process was heaven sent. I want to be that amazing nurse. I want to give others what was so generously given to me and my family. I want to be there for people and their loved one like those nurses had been for us; to advocate on their behalf, share their joy, listen to their worries and fears, support them, offer them comfort, and show them empathy when they are at their most vulnerable time in life.
