The Insanity Plea

Need 350 words. Please pay attention to instructions regarding your last name.   A very "hot" topic in psychology is the controversial insanity plea. If your last name starts with A through L, you will be arguing FOR THE INSANITY PLEA. If your last name starts with M through Z, you will be arguing AGAINST THE INSANITY PLEA. The assignment is: 1. Research the M'Naughton Rules for insanity, and state what they are. This section is important, research it well. 2. Formulate your opinion from your research and argue your point, depending on your last name. Try to be objective with your report, not emotional. This is one area of psychology where emotions tend to "fog" a persons objectivity. What is the percentage of cases that try to "go for the insanity plea?" You might be surprised how LOW IT IS. A good historical case to review is Andrea Yates in Texas in 2001.  There are many recent cases as well. The "joker" Aurora shooter is one example.  When should the insanity plea be used, or not? Again. Most will be surprised how often the insanity plea is NOT USED!!! in spite of "public belief."  This discussion is related to chapter/unit 14.
