This paper will be a 4-6 page (1000-1200 words), 1.5 or 2.0-spaced, typed analytical “research essay” and not simply a review or a summary of themes and ideas.

A research essay proposes an argument and supports it with evidence drawing on textual sources, facts and other forms of reasoning. The main difference from other forms of essays is that a research essay includes a much larger variety of sources. In this essay, you will propose an argument and support your claims.

Because it is so source-dependent, the effective research essay relies upon specific and frequent citation from its sources in order to be credible. At the same time it should also not lose sight of the fact that it is written and argued from the position of the writer—it requires a distinct thesis argument and should not simply be a summary of the views of others (Ganter, n.d.)

1)      In total, the final paper should include a minimum of five (5) sources. At least two (2) of those sources should be from academic peer-reviewed journals. Our library’s online database should help you find some. Additional sources NOT from the assigned class readings or NOT from academic databases must be academically credible. Sources about your topic on the open Internet are, generally speaking, NOT academically credible. Please consult our Capilano Guide to Writing Assignments in order to assess and evaluate the credibility of your internet sources BEFORE using them in your paper. Above all, ask your instructor if you can use a certain source.

2)      The “audience” for your papers is not the instructor but a general academic audience. You may not assume that they have textual familiarity with our course readings.

FORMAT The paper should follow the APA citation format, including a title, in-text parenthetical citations, and References. Your References page does not count towards the total word count.

The assignment will be done in steps. In order to get grades for each step, you will have to show progression/ development of your ideas. You cannot move to the next step until the previous one has been approved/ discussed with the instructor. You cannot submit a completely different version as the final copy. There will be deadline posted on eLearn for each step.
