Question
1-1 Psychology as a Science
Psychology (the scientific study of
behaviour and mental processes) is the
scientific study of behaviour and mental
processes. Topics of interest to
psychologists include the nervous
system, sensation and perception, learning and memory, intelligence, language, thought,
growth and development, personality, stress and health, psychological disorders, ways of
treating those disorders, and the behaviour of people in social settings such as groups and
organizations.
The questions you answered in the Try It! box include some of the questions that Griggs
and Ransdell (1987) asked students in introductory psychology classes. How did you do? If
you responded “false” to all of the items, then you did very well! If you responded “true” in
some cases, we are excited for you (even though you got the answers wrong)—you
especially will be learning about the science of psychology throughout this course! You have
been taken prisoner to the power of common sense, which has led you to believe some
popular misconceptions about our behaviour and thinking processes.
