Description

In class we examined Manning’s approach to policing and Sudnow’s work on normal crime. In this work they undertake the reflexive task of "to make explicit those structures that remain merely implicit and taken for granted" (Zaner, 1970:82) (in Heap and Roth 1973). Phenomenological sociology shares with ethnomethodology an interest in uncovering the routine grounds of everyday activities (Garfinkel 1964). These are traditions that involve an uncovering of the taken-for-granteds that make the social world reportable and understandable for all practical purposes — or “normal.” In this paper you will draw upon at least two of the readings in the “Phenomenology and Ethnomethodology” section and provide an overview of this approach (I would encourage you to read Vail’s article on tattoo collectors gain as sense of another empirical example of this approach before reading Sudnow, Garfinkel or Heap and Roth) . Centrally, how does this tradition help us to understand the conditions under which we can talk of “normal” and “deviance” at the very same time? (Length: approx. 5 pages excluding title page and references).
