QUESTION

Discuss how Orientalism operates as a discourse affecting human rights and everyday lives of

certain groups of people in Canada.

GUIDELINES

Format

This assignment should follow essay format. This means that you should come up with a coherent

set of ideas and present them in a unified and logical argument. Ideas should develop methodically,

one at a time, in the right logical sequence, so that they make sense. A good essay is one in which

ideas are laid out in themes that connect logically into passages or paragraphs to communicate

persuasively your line of reasoning.

Content, organization, and structure

The essay must have an introduction that clearly outlines the main purpose of the paper, provides a

glimpse of the central focus of the essay, and sets the tone for what is to come. The introduction

should have clear and strong thesis statement and how the paper will evolve and is organized.

The second part of your essay is the body, the area where you take time to develop, explain, and

elaborate key arguments in support of the thesis statement you earlier indicated in your

introduction. You can divide this part of your essay into relevant sub-headings or sections,

organized in a logical sequence. Your work must demonstrate outstanding critical thought and

evidence of strong analysis (including integrating ideas from different but related topics),

organization, and superior grasp of the subject matter. This part of the essay must also demonstrate

subtle and versatile interpretation of ideas and rigorous evaluation of terms and concepts. You

should use appropriate sources and properly cite the evidence in support of key arguments and

assertions. Please ensure that your essay is exceptionally well-written. This includes the use of

precise and unambiguous words, clear connections between sentences and paragraphs, smooth

transition statements between sentences, and fluency of sentences.

Please take time to properly introduce your arguments, including defining important concepts and

providing relevant context to key issues. Where appropriate, use examples to demonstrate your

arguments, but avoid regurgitating examples already used in this class. Well-chosen, original

examples can help illustrate your argument. By supporting abstract ideas with concrete real-life

situations, you can help clarify generalizations, make arguments more specific, and add depth to

your essay.

Your essay must end with a conclusion that provides a synthesis of your main argument/s you have

laid out. Your conclusion may also highlight what your essay has been able to achieve/not achieve

or suggest new questions relevant to the discourse of orientalism in everyday life.

2

Sources

In addition to the references from the course outline, you must cite at least 8 additional peer-

reviewed journal papers and/or book chapters. These 8 sources should be new readings, and not

those already read in this course. Your essay should demonstrate that these sources have been used

substantively and creatively to strengthen your arguments, and not just citing them to make up the

number. The evidence gleaned from these sources to support your arguments should be rich,

detailed, and well selected. You should take time to conduct thorough search to identify sources

that are relevant to your work and of good quality. Do not use direct quotations from any of the

readings and sources. Interpret and paraphrase quotations using your own words and cite them

accordingly. Only book chapters and journal articles will count as sources.

Referencing and citation

References are important because they help you develop and provide support for your arguments.

References also allow readers to follow up or crosscheck your work if necessary. Choose

referencing and citation style of your liking so long as you are consistent.

Plagiarism

The “use and pass off as one's own idea or product work of another without expressly giving credit

to another” is an instructional offense. Being caught plagiarizing can result in one being expelled

and suspended from all studies at Carleton. Please acknowledge other people’s ideas but citing

them.

Word count

The minimum word count for this exam is 2500 words, excluding references.

Backing up files

please remember to back up your electronic work as often as possible so you do not lose your work

should your computer malfunction. Computer and printer malfunction are not legitimate excuse or

reason to ask for deadline extension.

Due date

This assignment is due on April 27 at midnight. The deadline has been generously set to

accommodate unforeseen circumstances such as illnesses and family commitments. This means

that the deadline is final. You must start working on your assignment as soon as possible to ensure

you are still able to submit your assignment on time just in case you suffer last minute personal

setbacks that might prevent you from meeting the deadline. Submissions should exclusively be

done electronically via the submission portal entitled ‘Exam Submission’ in your CuLearn. Please

write you assignment outside the CuLearn system on your personal computer and upload it as an

attachment in CuLearn after you have finished writing and editing it. Please remember to keep for

yourself a copy of your essay.

Weighting

This is the final assignment for this class. It accounts for 40% of your final grade.

Good Luck!
