Question

Description

Based on the course material discussed, pick one health disparity or health issue the LGBT community is at risk for. (Preferably HIV/AIDS in the gay community)

Provide some introduction and background on your specific topic in your first 2-3 paragraphs, describing the specific health issue in depth. Cite facts and figures from reputable sources such as from the cdc, health organizations, or other medically-published literature or websites. Please avoid citing Wikipedia. In these paragraphs, make sure you explain what the health disparity/problem/issue is and why it’s so important. Mention any pertinent statistics or population demographics that are important for this health issue. Thoroughly look at the issue from all angles including the why, who, when, and where.

In 2-3 following paragraphs, describe the impact that stigma may have on the health disparity you have chosen. Can/does stigma impact this LGBT health issue? How? (maybe people do not disclose their status for fear of rejection/forgo treatment for fear of discrimination in health care?)

In your final 2-3 paragraphs, describe how you think an initiative in the humanities such as a piece of art, a play or movie, music, or an advocacy movement (ie: ACT UP, AIDS Quilt, GLAAD, etc) may impact (or has already impacted) this specific health disparity/issue. Feel free to pick any humanities piece of interest to you that you think is applicable to this health disparity/issue. In these paragraphs, specifically explain the humanities piece, what it is, and what you think of its potential impact on the LGBT community from a health perspective. (preferable use the ACT UP campaign or the AIDS Memorial Quilt)

In your final paragraph, give your own personal impression/opinion of the humanities piece. What do you personally think of it? How do you feel when you read/listen to/view/think about it? How does the humanities piece make you more or less connected to the health disparity you’ve described? How does the humanities piece make you more or less connected to the LGBT community?
