Thus far the course has involved covering the rise of sectionalism in the United States, the compromises that ensued to keep the Union in order, through to the final breaking point which was the election of the Republican Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Reflect on the lasting impact or memory of the Civil War on American history. Specifically, how do you think the Civil War has become a watershed of American history that not only ended slavery, but also taught brotherhood and still speaks to us today? Approach this question from both the white and the African American perspective. Be specific, and give examples to support your statements.
