Description

The next paper will be an argument paper where you use your research to make an argument about your topic. In other words, for this paper you will take a stand on your issue and attempt to convince your reader about your position on that issue. Here are the steps:

First, you need to research your topic and explore the various positions on your issue so you understand what the conversation about your issue is about.

Once you have some general knowledge of what your topic is about, what various groups are saying about the issue, and what your own position is on the issue, and you’ve done more extensive research on your topic so you understand the topic and WHY you have that position, you are ready to begin drafting your own argument about it. In other words, you need to start with a claim that explains your overall position on the issue. Where do you stand on your issue? How do you feel about it? You then need to give reasons for having that position on the issue. Why do you have that position on the issue? Why do you feel the way that you do about this issue? And, for each reason you will need to present evidence so you can convince your reader more effectively about your position on the issue (this is especially where your research comes in).

As you make your argument, don’t forget to build ethos, pathos, and logos into your discussion. For instance, to build ethos (credibility) you need to show that you know what you are talking about and you aren’t overly biased. To include pathos you need to include at least one example that will help to “rile up” your reader and make him/her feel strongly about your topic. To include logos you need to use facts and figures and show logical connections.
