Description
Issues of race and ethnicity are very timely. We have recently witnessed repeated mass protests on a global scale against anti-Black racism and police brutality. To facilitate our engagement with race in the contemporary era, you will be responsible for reading up on news and current events as we go through this course. I recommend reading multiple news sources with contrasting political viewpoints and perspectives. For instance, you can read a local newspaper like the Raleigh’s News and Observer or a nationally focused one like The New York Times. In general, I don’t mind the political leanings news source as long as you engage with them critically. All news sources have bias and no one is entirely “objective,” and usually even news you politically disagree with at times make good points. For instance, you may want to take a glance at prominent leftist news sources like Jacobin and conservative ones like National Review. If you are not sure about a source, please let me know.
Post a recent (within the last year) news article, popular culture, social media, or other online example that highlights one sociological concept that was brought up in the section’s course content in the Sakai forum, along with a brief explanation and course citation. In your brief post please mention the following. Ideally, your post should be at minimum 5 sentences long.
Provide a link to the online news source and summarize it in 2-3 sentences.
Make note of the article’s differing perspectives. This could be anything from noting the level of analysis (national vs. local-level), the possible political leaning of each newspaper (liberal, moderate, conservative), or the medium of the source (is it cable news, social media, a newspaper, etc.). Another thing to note is the author of the piece – what else have they written in the past?
Explain how current events reported by the news article connect to one of the section’s themes or sociological concepts. How do the issues explored in the article enhance our understanding about the section’s themes or one of its sociological concepts?
