First, read an excerpt from Andrew Carnegie's book Wealth (pp. 22-24). if you do not have the textbook, you can find the discussion in a pdf attachment in this post.
Then, start learning about the literature of social empowerment (of historically marginalized classes) as it appears in later 19th-century American realism, by reading the following primary texts:
-Hamlin Garland's short story ("Under the Lion's Paw" pp. 390-403),
-Sarah Orne Jewett's short story ("The Town Poor" pp. 549-560),
-Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's short story ("The Revolt of 'Mother'" pp. 366-378),
-Paul Lawrence Dunbar's poem ("We Wear the Mask" pp. 333), and
-Edith Maud Eaton's short story ("In the Land of the Free'" pp. 341-349).
