Essay Question: At the end of the Revolutionary War, American colonists were faced with the task of building a united country. Despite having come together to defeat the British, the colonies were incredibly diverse and divided over a number of issues, including slavery and the place of African Americans in the new nation.

What divisions in the colonies emerged over the issue of slavery and the slave trade? How did the founding fathers address slavery in the Constitution? What challenges did free African Americans face in post-Revolutionary America?

Guidelines: Answer the question in approximately 2–3 paragraphs or between 400 and 600 words. Follow any additional guidelines from your instructor in terms of content, length, and formatting.
