Write a letter to a legislator regarding a current health problem that you have identified at the state or national level. Please use the guidelines outlined at the end of the syllabus and submit it to the assigned drop box on Canvas by Sunday at 11:59pm. On the last page of your assignment (letter), please provide proof of postal mailing or emailing the letter to the legislator. Also, please make sure that your submitted copy of the letter has a title page.

Guidelines for Letter to a Legislator

Purpose: To provide the opportunity for students to practice influencing policy by communicating with a  legislator about a current health problem.

Instructions: Students must complete the following steps:

1.     Select a current health problem that is being debated at the national and/or state level and state why it is of interest to you.

2.     Identify a legislator (state or federal) and state why that person is the appropriate one to contact.

3.     Write a 6-7 paragraph letter to the legislator including the proper salutation.

4.     Introduce yourself and your reason (s) for writing.

5.     State concisely what you understand to be the current socioeconomic, political, and ethical issues surrounding the problem (support your claim[s]).

6.     Discuss the implications of the problem for the nursing profession related to education, practice and research (support your claim[s]).

7.     Make a clear request for action.

8.     Request a response.

9.     Postal mail or email the letter to the Legislator and ensure that you have proof of mailing the letter on the last page of a copy of the letter and upload it to the assigned dropbox by Sunday at 11:59pm.
